This brief prepared for COP24, the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), highlights the sharply falling costs of solar, wind and other renewable power-generation options, along with the growing viability of energy storage technologies. It builds on findings in IRENA’s comprehensive report, Renewable power generation costs in 2017.

Developing cities seeking to assess their policy and financing options for rooftop photovoltaic (PV) power generation can benefit from the increasing sophistication of rooftop PV simulators. This report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) examines the evolution of solar PV simulators, from single-rooftop assessments at the household level to large-scale, aggregate-level analyses undertaken by municipal authorities and other large entities. Larger-scale simulator applications, typically preceding the establishment PV incentive programmes, help to determine the optimal power mix and ensure the long-term viability.

Last week’s Energy Storage Summit 2019 saw the great and the good of Europe’s energy storage sector gather at London’s Victoria Plaza for two days of discussion, debate and networking.

The Energy Storage News, Solar Power Portal and Current± editorial teams were present throughout the event, highlighting give key themes that emerged at a crucial time for the storage sector.
